Questlove’s ‘Summer of Soul’ Documentary Wins Sundance 2021 Grand Jury Prize

The Roots’ drummer Questlove has won the 2021 Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival for his directorial debut “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)”, a documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.

The festival was filmed, but the footage sat in a basement for 50 years until “Summer of Soul”. The documentary includes performances from Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, The Staple Singers, B.B. King, and other legendary artists.
